The grand re-opening of the Walker Art Center was quite the spectacle where Hennepin meets Lyndale. A special
preview party was held for members only, Saturday, the night before the rest of
us were able to step foot in the new Walker.
The building itself is quite a sight
indeed. The aluminum mesh membrane of,
what a Star Tribune writer humorously coined "a rock 'em sock 'em robot head,"
refracts and reflects light in dynamic ways. Many new spaces were created to
connect people to the outside. Linking
the original “brown building” a balcony gives views to downtown Minneapolis,
a hallway underneath provides a nicely bathed area with natural light. Throughout the hallways, small nooks were cut
into the wall where you can further your experience through audio and
monitors. Texture and use of different
materials are trademarks of the Swiss architects, Herzog and De Mueron. This may be only their second project in the
States, as of yet.
Oh by the way, if the
building wasn’t enough to get out to the Walker, there is plenty of art in the galleries by the likes of Mark
Rothko, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and so forth. A wide variety of mediums and styles will
keep in you intrigued/entertained/confused/happy/sad and every emotion in
between.
If you live in the metro area, scrape
together a few dollars and find your way to the new Walker Art Center.
And for those that live elsewhere, you
might want to consider a stop in Minneapolis
and experience the Walker yourself.
